Relaxation for the Mind

When we stare at the sea, it has a calming effect on the body and puts the mind in a mild meditative state according to psychologist Richard Shuster. Throw in the soothing sound of the lapping sea and the gentle touch of the sea breeze, and the rest of the world with it’s worries momentarily melts away.

What exactly is it about the sea that has this calming effect? It could be the fact that the air near the sea is rich in negative ions, meaning that the oxygen atoms have an extra electron, which when breathed in contribute to a relaxed state of mind. Or perhaps its the visual effect of the colors. One study found that seeing green and blue brings tranquility and can even stimulate creativity in the brain.

Exercise for the Body

The coast is the perfect playground for physical activity. Whether it’s a jog along the shore, a dip in the sea, or a graceful routine of calisthenics, the coast abounds with opportunity for all ages to stay fit.

Perhaps these opportunities for activity have something to do with why those living closer to the coast report both significantly better mental and general health according to one English study.
